Something serious has happened to Kanye West. Millions are in shock as reports continue to flood in which suggest that the King of Hip-hop has been crucified with Christ.
“I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”
Galatians 2:20
I know, it’s a little clickbaity, but stick with me for a second.
Shocking News
Kanye West is professing to be a Christian. And not your namby pamby, Biblically illiterate, squishy, emotional, pagan garbage sometimes called Christianity. No prosperity gospel. No works righteousness. No mystic confusion. No politically acceptable civic religion. Biblically grounded, fundamental Christianity. Kanye is serious, and it’s causing waves.
You know the type. Pro family, pro life, pro religious freedom, pro Jesus Christ- King and absolute authority. Really alive right now, seated in Heaven until the day He returns to judge the world. Pro telling people that rejecting Him is spiritual suicide. That type. The type that really believes the Bible is true.
Is Kanye crazy?
Well what’s crazier, believing that pure happenstance, mere coincidence is behind Humming Birds, Roses, Bombardier Beetles, the World Series, the Aurora Borealis, and Ray Charles, or that Somebody is showing off? It’s not a difficult question.
Kanye’s not crazy. He’s clothed and in his right mind (Luke 8:26-39). This is a man who’s fessing up to the Truth. He’s being honest with reality and with himself, that God exists, He has put us here to worship, adore, and obey Him, and we’ve failed miserably. Rebelling like we have is egregious and deserves swift judgment, but God has unspeakable mercy ready in the wings for those who would only, humbly ask. This is the message that steamrolled Ye.
I find it funny.
I’ve been around the block and have heard some knock down arguments for the existence of God, but none more compelling than, “that time Kanye West realized there was something more important than himself.”
Humbling an ego like his may even rival the conversion of the Apostle Paul on his way to murder Christians in Damascus. Nobody saw it coming, and even fewer people knew what to do with it. If Kanye’s recent transformation isn’t proof enough that God is powerful beyond measure and gracious to a fault, there isn’t proof enough.
Friendly Fire
No doubt, more than a handful of “discernment warriors” will be vocally skeptical of Kanye’s conversion. And in a sense they are correct. Every single professing Christian is only as good as the spirit that fills their sails, that moves them to either safe harbor or a rocky grave. Kanye is no different. And neither are you. And neither am I.
Time will prove the validity of his profession (as none of God’s children fall away). But I’ll say this much, there is nothing in what I’ve heard and seen [at all] that would lead me to doubt his profession as genuine, quite the opposite.
I have deep joy, not in hearing “Kanye became a Christian!” like Christianity somehow took the lead when he converted, but in just hearing him talk about what God has done and is doing in his life. And being where he is, surrounded by vice and temptation on every side, he needs our prayers right now infinitely more than our high church criticism.
I hope that when, like Kanye, you yourself come to realize your own frailty and how dreadfully you need God’s mercy, that you follow in his footsteps. That you walk the path that leads to scandalous grace. That you hasten towards glory- towards the voice that lifts up free redemption at the price of Jesus’ blood. I hope you leave the old man on the cross with Christ and so walk out of the tomb with Him, never to die again.
Like Kanye did.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”
2 Corinthians 5:17
